I’m not sure if you knew about this but Norah Jones starred alongside Natalie Portman and Jude Law in the recent film “My Blueberry Nights”.  Norah is famous for her multiple award winning musical CDs, but recently made the transition into acting, which appears to have been by accident!

“It’s nothing I seriously thought of or even wanted to try. But the truth is I like to ham it up with my friends. The bad news is I’ve always been a bit of a shy performer. So I was more than a little bit nervous about doing a movie.”

But Norah hard next to none experience.  She’s performed in front of thousands before, but never has she been on the big screen.

“The director welcomed my natural reactions. Honestly, I don’t know if I could be a great actress in a different situation, but it worked for this movie. It was such a unique film with a unique director that I just trusted him. He told me not to take acting lessons. He just wanted me to be raw and natural. So in many ways the entire movie was one big acting lesson.”

Norah’s character, Elizabeth, is a woman who’s heart gets broke after her boyfriend leaves her for another woman.  It’s a very relatable character, one that people everywhere in all countries can identify with.

“I think all girls will identify. Poor Elizabeth is very sad, but I didn’t want her to seem pathetic. Yet there is one scene where she’s on the street looking up into an apartment window where her boyfriend is having fun with his new girlfriend. At that moment, she really is the saddest girl on earth, which just breaks my heart. But we’ve all been there.”

I’m sure it was a lot easier to play a character that you can personally relate with (at least it would be for me, who doesn’t have acting experience except for the old high school plays).

However, there is one good thing about acting!  Norah got paid to kiss Jude Law 90 times before they got a good take!  Now that’s a job I wouldn’t turn down!

“It was an interesting situation and it was just plain weird. I had to kiss Jude about 90 times and I didn’t want to laugh, but it seemed so ridiculous. What in the world am I doing kissing Jude Law? He’s Jude … and I’m … me. We laughed a lot between takes. It was actually very choreographed, but there was beautiful music playing in the background. Now when I hear that music I think about kissing Jude Law.”

I wonder if the experience of kiss Jude Law 90 times is enough to convert Norah over to acting permanently.  I sure hope not, because she’s an amazing musician!
